IT, Wi-Fi and technology for hotels and hospitality

WVM-IT plans and looks after the technology of hotels, guesthouses and hospitality businesses in Austria and Germany: guest Wi-Fi separated from the operational network, POS systems, booking connections, workstations and backups. A measured network with Wi-Fi starts at €890, ongoing support at €29 per workstation and month. Planning is done remotely; building and surveying happen on site.

In hospitality, IT is part of the product. Guests rate the Wi-Fi the way they rate breakfast, and they do it publicly. At the same time the same line carries things that have nothing to do with the guest: point of sale, accounts, time tracking, cameras. Separating those two worlds cleanly is not a refinement but the foundation.

What is different in hotels and hospitality

  • The load is seasonal and abrupt. A network that copes with twenty devices in November faces three hundred in August — every room brings two to four.
  • Guests are strangers on the network. Their devices must not even be able to see the till, the accounts and the cameras, let alone reach them.
  • POS systems tolerate no outage at peak time. A restart at seven in the evening is not maintenance but lost revenue.
  • Staff turn over quickly and work in shifts. Creating and disabling accounts has to be routine, not a job for the owner.
  • Old fabric and sprawling sites: thick walls, outbuildings, terraces, function rooms. Radio does not get there by itself.

What we take on in a hotel or hospitality business

  • Surveying, planning and building Wi-Fi — for rooms, dining room, terrace, function room and outbuildings
  • Separate networks: guests, operations, POS and cameras cleanly segregated from one another
  • POS and booking connections: network, access and backups behind them (the specialist software stays with its vendor)
  • Workstations at reception and in the office: setup, updates, printers, user accounts
  • Backups, verified daily, with a tested restore
  • A process for seasonal staff: create the account, assign rights, disable it on the last working day

Till, booking and what depends on them

We do not operate POS and booking systems ourselves — they come from specialist providers and stay there. What we take on is everything they depend on: a stable line, a network in which they work undisturbed by guest devices, a workstation that starts, a printer that prints, and backups of the data held locally. We state that split in advance — at peak time nobody wants to work out who is responsible.

The mistake that returns every summer

One more access point, because "it does not reach at the back". It transmits on the same channel as the existing one, the two interfere, and devices attach to the wrong one. After that the Wi-Fi is not better but worse — everywhere. A guest network that holds comes from a survey, a channel plan and access points on their own cables. That is effort once and then years of quiet, instead of one more device every summer.

What it costs

Surveying, planning and setting up network and Wi-Fi starts at €890, firewall and separate networks at €690. Ongoing support costs from €29 per workstation and month, monitored backups from €49 per month. A website with an enquiry path starts at €350. Ad-hoc help is billed at €95 per hour, on-site work at €120 per hour plus travel. Guide prices, net plus VAT.

Frequently asked questions

How many access points does a thirty-room house need?

That can only be answered seriously after a survey — fabric, layout and materials matter more than the number of rooms. A lightweight new build needs considerably fewer than an old building with half-metre walls. We survey and then give you the number; any figure before that would be a guess.

Are we liable if a guest does something illegal over our Wi-Fi?

The legal position for open networks in Austria and Germany is more relaxed than it used to be, but that is not the real point. What matters is the technical separation: a guest network fully separated from the operational network confines any damage to the guest network. That is how we set it up, regardless of how the liability question turns out in a given case.

Can you also rebuild outside the season?

That is the right time, and we plan for it explicitly. Anything involving cabling, access points or replacing equipment belongs in the low season or on a closing day. Whatever can be done remotely we do continuously anyway.

Our POS runs through a provider. Is that a problem for you?

No, on the contrary — that is the normal case and usually the right solution. We make sure the environment is right: its own network segment, a stable line, no interference from guest devices, backups of locally stored data. In case of faults we are happy to deal with the provider directly rather than sending you between two hotlines.

Where does it break down — in the room, on the terrace, at the till?

Briefly describe what is failing and how large the property is. We reply within 24 hours on working days and tell you whether a survey is needed or whether it is something simpler.
